Vitamin D Deficiency
We can create vitamin D in our skin through exposure to sunlight. However, it is not as good as we would like. Scientific studies show that half of us have insufficient levels of vitamin D in the summer. In winter, up to 90% of people in the Czech Republic do not have enough of this most important fat-soluble vitamin. The sun does not shine on us very often and we spend too much time indoors.
Positive effects of vitamin D
Insufficient levels of vitamin D can lead to problems with bones, teeth, muscles or even our immune system. The minimum recommended level is 75μmol/l, the optimal level is above 110μmol/l. This is very difficult to achieve without taking supplements. Most Czechs suffer from a deficiency all winter (but also in summer). The role of Vitamin D not only in our immune system is essential.
Role in aging
Vitamin D contributes to maintaining the normal function of muscles, bones, teeth and the immune system. Its deficiency leads to weakening of muscles and bones. It is a strong musculoskeletal system that extends the length of life spent in health. Without a healthy load of exercise, it is impossible to slow down aging.
Insights and scientific studies
Most Czechs do not have sufficient levels of Vitamin D. Many patients take Vitamin D, but do not take enough of it. The recommendation based on Czech legislation states that patients should take 2000IU once every two days. However, for the vast majority of patients, this dosage is insufficient and in reality, 2000IU (one capsule) should be taken every day, usually from the beginning of September until the end of June.
According to the scientific work of Behnaz et al., vitamin D deficiency is associated with atrophy (reduction in strength) of muscle fibers, an increased risk of chronic musculoskeletal pain, sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass), and falls.
