Brání SPF tvorbě vitamínu D?

Does SPF prevent vitamin D production?

Posted by Beauty Concept Sisters Project on

With the arrival of sunny days, a question often arises:

if sunscreen blocks sunlight, does that mean the body will stop producing vitamin D?

The short answer is: no, using SPF does not usually lead to vitamin D deficiency. Let us explain why.

How vitamin D is produced

Vitamin D is produced in the skin through exposure to UVB radiation from the sun. That is why sunlight is important for its production.

Sunscreen does indeed filter out some UVB radiation. For example, SPF 30 sunscreen blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays.

At first glance, it might therefore seem that vitamin D cannot be produced when using SPF.

But reality is different

In reality, most people do not apply sunscreen in the amount used in laboratory tests. In addition, we often do not apply it completely evenly and forget to reapply it during the day.

This means that some UVB radiation still reaches the skin, so vitamin D production can occur even when using SPF.

Studies also show that people who regularly use sunscreen do not have a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency than those who do not use SPF.

What matters more than SPF

Vitamin D deficiency is relatively common in Europe, but it is usually not related to the use of sunscreen. More common causes include:

  • a lack of sunlight during winter
  • working mainly indoors
  • a lifestyle with minimal time spent outdoors

Is it worthwhile to use SPF?

Yes. Dermatologists agree that protection from UV radiation is essential for skin health. Regular use of SPF helps:

  • prevent premature skin aging
  • protect the skin from pigmentation
  • reduce the risk of sun damage to the skin

At the same time, a short time in the sun during the day is usually enough for the body to produce vitamin D.

Summary

Using SPF does not mean that the body will stop producing vitamin D.

On the contrary, it is an important step in preventing skin damage and premature aging.

The key is balance: sensible time in the sun and daily skin protection.
