Brání SPF tvorbě vitamínu D?

Does SPF prevent vitamin D production?

Posted by Beauty Concept Sisters Project on

With the arrival of sunny days, a question often arises:

If sunscreen blocks sunlight, does that mean the body stops producing vitamin D?

The short answer is no, using SPF usually doesn't lead to vitamin D deficiency. Let's explain why.

How vitamin D is produced

Vitamin D is produced in the skin due to the action of UVB radiation from the sun. This is why sunlight is important for its formation.

Sunscreen actually filters some of the UVB radiation. For example, SPF 30 cream blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays.

At first glance, it might seem that vitamin D cannot be produced when using SPF.

But the reality is different

In reality, most people don't apply sunscreen in the quantities used in laboratory tests. Furthermore, we often don't apply cream completely evenly and forget to reapply it throughout the day.

This means that some UVB radiation still reaches the skin, and vitamin D production can occur even when using SPF.

Moreover, studies show that people who regularly use sunscreens do not have a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency than those who do not use SPF.

What's more important than SPF

Vitamin D deficiency is relatively common in Europe, but it is usually not related to the use of sunscreens. More common causes include:

  • lack of sunlight during winter
  • working predominantly indoors
  • a lifestyle with minimal outdoor exposure

So, does it make sense to use SPF?

Yes. Dermatologists agree that protection from UV radiation is crucial for skin health. Regular use of SPF helps to:

  • prevent premature skin aging
  • protect skin from pigmentation
  • reduce the risk of sun damage

At the same time, a short exposure to the sun during the day is usually enough for the body to produce vitamin D.

Summary

Using SPF does not mean that the body stops producing vitamin D.

On the contrary, it is an important step in preventing skin damage and premature aging.

The key is balance: sensible sun exposure and daily skin protection.
